After just a few moments with him, it is clear that AJ Cooper is different from other candidates. Cooper, a DC native, earned over 25,000 votes along with citywide support and notoriety in his recent City Council bid. He has announced his candidacy for the upcoming Special Election to fill the vacant At-Large seat on the Council.
Cooper speaks passionately about social justice issues, and is a fan of what he calls “straight talk and common sense.” Cooper adds, “I am not afraid to speak the truth, even when it is unpopular. We as a community are bigger than the challenges we face, but we have to be willing to take an honest look at the issues if we want real solutions.”
Cooper also believes that our government’s highest priority must be ensuring that our children are prepared for future success, and proffers solutions like family and community engagement in our schools, homegrown green energy initiatives, and respect for the residents of the District.
AJ Cooper, former host of BET’s Teen Summit, has long been an advocate for youth and other vulnerable populations. He currently serves as Policy Director for DC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, and has worked with a number of local and national nonprofit organizations.
Cooper stands for a new age of honest representation for all DC residents. A dedicated and motivated young man, AJ Cooper is a breath of fresh air and a step in the right direction for the people of DC.
