The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture has announced that famed television talk show host and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey has donated $12 million dollars to the museum which is currently under construction. Winfrey has been a member of the museum’s advisory board since 2004, before official construction begun
The museum, which is set to open in late 2015, will become the Smithsonian’s 19th museum and will tell the story of African-American history, from slavery, to the post-Civil War period, the civil rights era, the Harlem Renaissance and into the 21st century.
