CT Graduation
Cedar Tree Academy will gain over forty new students to its first grade class-beginning fall 2014. These forty plus students graduated from the public charter school’s kindergarten class the last week of June. School President, Dr. LaTonya Henderson, said, “I am so happy for my kindergarten students advancing to the next level.” A longtime educator, Henderson has been the head of Cedar Tree for over three years and says she has enjoyed every last minute of it, but truly loves seeing each class advance to the next level.
The school’s graduation took place at The Arc, on Mississippi Ave. SE and Democratic Primary winner and Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser was the keynote speaker. Congress Heights Community Development Corporation Executive Director, Monica Ray introduced Bowser and during her introduction said, “I believe she will become the next mayor of the District of Columbia.” During her remarks, Bowser spoke about how education is a key tenet in the upbringing of children and that her administration will focus on equalizing the educational experiences in every ward across the District.
During the ceremony kindergarten students from each of the graduating classes presented a presentation to the parents, teacher and students. One class read the late Dr. Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise” poem, while another class danced to pop music. Dr. Henderson and the graduating class’s teachers presented parents with awards who had been overly active during the school year. Henderson said, “I think it’s important that we highlight parents who have shown stellar support in their child’s education. So often we find parents who are disengaged, but those who are overly active are noticed and they should be highlighted.” The graduates are the future class of 2026.
