In November of this year, it will be a year since the passing of the District’s Mayor for Life, Marion S. Barry, Jr. Barry, not only the longest serving mayor also served Ward 8 as a councilmember for four terms. After his death many questioned how the city would respond to keeping his legacy alive.
Mayor Muriel Bowser created a commemorative commission to decide how the city should keep his legacy alive. In a public meeting with the commission in late August the commission heard from the public about ways to commemorate Barry’s legacy. In its release of a draft proposal, the commission heard comments from the public on its four recommendations: renaming Ward 8’s Ballou High School, naming the University of the District of Columbia’s student center after Barry, erecting a statue in the Wilson Building and renaming Oxon Run Park after him.
The commission has said it will make a final decision by the end of this year.
