The Big Chair Coffee & Grill is named after the Big Chair that sits across the street. First built in 1959 and 19.5 feet high by Bassett Furniture Industries of Virginia to advertise the furniture store, the chair is one of Historic Anacostia’s landmark’s.
When we walked in Big Chair it was empty but we were greeted very well by the staff . I found the interior to be a bit small and a tad dark. There is a larger second floor which feature’s art for purchase by local artists. We sat at the lunch counter on the first floor which could seat about 8 people. We were given a paper menu featuring 12 different sandwiches and burgers and a few salads. There is also a full bar behind the counter. I chose a turkey burger.
The burger was a tad bland and the bread a bit cold. I felt it was just ok. The fries however were seasoned and very tasty! I was told later that the veggie burger apparently is a better option so if you visit try that one.
Big Chair Coffee & Grill also serves a wide variety of coffee and teas including a “Marion Barry Latte†that sounded divine! I would return to Big Chair Coffee & Grill if I wanted to meet someone for coffee and to advantage of the free wireless.
