As the summer heats up, more markets will be opening. This is true for the Ward 7 Farmers’ Market, set to open Saturday July 30th. It will be located on the parking lot of the Pennsylvania Avenue Baptist Church, located at 300 Pennsylvania Ave. SE. The market will be open every third Saturday of each month and will run until November.
The market is co-organized by dreamingoutloud.org, a non-profit that focuses on advancing positive values for youth and children and Tariq Blaq, a local tea salesman. Dreaming out Loud is a community-based non-profit dedicated to youth development, like after school programs and creating social business opportunities that will help fuel money for solutions to problems. Founder and Executive Director of Dreaming Out Loud, Christopher Bradshaw said “we wanted this market to focus on promoting the Black farmers,” and this explains why the market will feature farmers from the Richmond, VA area.
The Black-owned produce will give consumers the opportunity to find out about Black farmers in the area. The market will also feature crafts, jewelry, stationary goods and holistic health. The market’s mission is to employ returning citizens and high school students.
